Hapenny This is the Abegweit Athletic Club Track Team. They were Maritime champions. The people who were on the team used their uniforms so that people could see the difference between teams. Uniforms were important because you just needed them to be on the team. It looks like in the picture, the uniforms were white and black or maybe a green colour. Usually, people might buy uniforms and shoes at a store, but every once in a while, they might be home made. I would say by the looks of the photo that these uniforms were made of silk or maybe a nice thin fabric like cotton.

The uniforms might even have been made within the general store, because most of the general stores looked like they had sewing machines. I think the workers might have prepared them when they had free time. The cost would be around $2.00, because two dollars was a lot of money back then.

It looks like the team is on a track. They would use the track uniforms at a track and field meet or just practicing. They usually had lots of races in the track and field events, like the 100 metre dash, hurdles, the javelin, the pole vault, the high jump, and the long jump. A lot of spectators came most of the time, because there were not as many sports back then, so the sports were always crowded. The grounds were small , because they didn't have enough money to make huge stadiums like the one today in Montreal and the other Olympic stadiums.
