Old Bicycle Advertisment

Advertisement for "Perfect" and "Garden City" bicycles, sold by W. E. Dawson. Appeared in the Guardian newspaper, 1 June 1895, page 3.

The picture shown is a bicycle advertisement from the Guardian newspaper from June 1, 1895 that says this bike is "light, durable and easy running." The picture also says, "SEE THE 'PERFECT' AND 'GARDEN CITY' BEFORE YOU BUY. They are warranted throughout by me. And are made of reinforced seamless steel tubing. They have the steel lock lace in the rims. Can give you your choice of all the leading makes of Tires. They are without doubt the easiest running wheel on the market. I have also in stock all extras and a complete line of BICYCLE SUNDRIES. W.E DAWSON."

The earlier bikes had one big wheel on the front and one small wheel on the back, and it was very hard for people to use them for transportation. (They were just for fun.) When they made bicycles with two equal sized wheels, people started using them for transportation. Both rich and poor people used them for transportation.

Bikes now have gears and people do tricks on them, but in the earlier years, people would just ride around in circles or go really fast down a hill.
