This is a picture of a shoe department in Summerside, PEI in 1911. On the shelves, there are boxes with shoes in them. Those shoes on the shelves are all different sizes, and the shelves go up about 20 feet in the air. If you wanted to get a size 9, the clerk got on the ladder on the side of the wall, slid across the wall and grabbed a size 9.

There were a lot of different shoes for different occasions, such as church, school, playing outside, and going out. The shoes came in a lot of different styles. Some were high, some were low, some had straps and some didn't. If you wanted a specific shoe, Holman's would probably have them. In the middle of the room, the store has a place where you could sit and try on your shoes before you bought them. After school, some of the kids would go to the Holman's Shoe Department and get their feet x-rayed. They had an x-ray machine so people could tell how big or small their feet were, so they could tell what size of shoe to get. This store could be found in downtown Summerside.
