Newbery Family Child at Work and Play

Adele Newbery playing in the backyard of the Newbery residence. She can be seen washing doll clothes using a washboard and basin, and several pieces of doll clothing can be seen hanging on the line behind her. A couple of dolls can be seen in the photograph, as well as a toy iron and ironing board, dishes, table, and chairs. Image dated ca. 1885-1910.

This is a picture of a little girl named Adele Newbery who lived in Charlottetown. She is washing and ironing her doll clothes at home. This family was very wealthy. In this picture, there are irons , a tea set, a washing board and soap. Every house had about four irons because some were put on the stove, and while they were heating up, the person ironing used the others. These irons were used for a long time and there were many kinds. The first ones that were made were very heavy. As more people bought irons, they became better quality.

The washing board is a board with a lot of bumps on one side of it. To wash the clothes, you:

1. Put the clothes in the bumpy side of the board.

2. Scrub the clothes on the board.

3. Hang the clothes to dry outside.
