Hockey Equipment

Studio portrait of the Abegweit Hockey Team Island Champions, 1898-1899. Several members can be seen holding hockey sticks and one member appears to be wearing goalie pads. This is a picture of an Island champion hockey team. The skates they wore were sold in the general store. The skates weren't that safe because there was no ankle support. I wouldn't want to be a goalie, because there was very little padding in the equipment. The sticks would not snap easily because they were wood. The blacksmith would make the buckles for the pads. The hockey sticks were sold for 10 cents. The skates cost $3.50, but the most expensive pair was $6.00. 50 cents was the cheapest. The puck cost up to 25 cents.
