Popular Sports and Toys for Boys
This is a page from Holman's Catalog showing baseball gear and their prices from the 1900's.
Boys in the early 1900's used to play sports when the chores were done. The boys loved to play sports, but their fathers made sure the chores were done before play. They would play baseball in the summer (along with soccer) and hockey in the winter. The steel toy truck was also a very popular toy for boys. The trucks were made of solid steel, and for most boys, trucks were on their Christmas wish list. Toy trains that were made of wood or metal were also very popular for young boys. Boys in the 1900's also enjoyed playing with toy guns or playing Indians. Guns cost between $0.06 to $1.25. Young boys also liked to play games after dinner when the girls were cleaning up. One of the most popular games was crokinole, which usually cost $1.20. Checkers was also very popular, and according to Holman's Catalogue, was worth $0.10 to $0.20. Boys also liked to play Steeple Chase, The Donkey Game, Parcheesi, Old Maid, and other card games.
