Marion and Adele Newbery Playing with Their Toys
This is a picture of Marion and Adele Newbery, taken by their father, Mr.Newbery, in 1896. They lived in Charlottetown in the late 1800's and the early 1900's with their mother, father and sister Flora (not shown in the photo). This was a rich family, as most average children in the early 1900's couldn't afford all of these toys. Most children in the 1900's would have a few of these toys. I used this picture to show you examples of popular toys that would be bought at the general store or a city store. As you can see in the background, Marion is hanging her doll's clothes out to dry, while Adele is doing the washing.
It was very popular in the 1900's for young girls to play house with their dolls. There are many common household items in the picture as well, such as dishes, chairs, tables, etc. There is also a stuffed cat in the bottom right hand corner. It was also very popular for young children (boys and girls) to have a steel wagon in the early 1900's.
