The Ewan Matthews Group
This photo shows the Ewan Matthews group. It consists of three people and a large horse. The horse is pulling a sleigh. The purpose might be so the horse can bring the people to their destination.
Sleighs were used to transport people and goods in the wintertime. They were more common in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. Probably every family had a sleigh on P.E.I back then. In my picture, it was Ewan Matthews and his buddies.
Well... the sleigh would have been made of wood and/or metal. The reins would be leather. From old records, I have seen sleighs range anywhere to $12.00 to $40.00. Sleigh prices varied; it all depended on how well the sleigh was made.
How have sleighs changed since then? You can buy sleighs today, except they cost more now. This object has not really changed since then; they might just have gotten a bit bigger and even possibly safer. Sleighs are still quite common in the winter.
Sleighs were always used for transportation in the wintertime, and sometimes still are.
