Group Gathering and Sleighs

Image depicts a large group of men and women gathered in front of a building, possibly a residence, with horse drawn sleighs. People can also be seen standing on the upper and lower verandahs. A faint marking in the lower right corner of the image appears to read "Lewis Photo, Ch'town." Markings on the back of the mounted photograph identify the image as Prince Edward Island, 1860-1880.

This picture is of a group in front of a large building with horse-drawn sleighs. This picture was taken between 1860 - 1880. Sleighs were popular in the winter, but only in the winter, because they are designed for ice and snow.

Sleighs were used to transport people and goods in the winter. Sleighs were usually made of wood and/or metal, and the building would be made out of lumber. Sleighs would have been used between the late 1800's and the early 1900's.

Sleighs are still quite popular for entertainment in the wintertime. Sleighs were used in the winter for numerous things. You can buy a sleigh today if you really wanted to; they would cost more, though.

Practically everyone used a sleigh in the winter. They were quite common.

Costs varied in sleighs, and probably still do. The lowest price I have seen for a sleigh from the old records was $7.00, I think.
