Holman's Special Shirt

Holman's Spring and Summer Catalog, No. 38, 1926. Image depicts page 2 and shows men's shirts and gloves. This is an ad for Holman's Special Shirt. The ad is from the Spring and Summer Catalog from 1926. The shirt cost 95 cents, and the ad says that this is a very special price. The ad describes the shirt as, "Men's fine negligee shirt made with laundered neck band and soft double cuffs. In assorted colored stripes on white ground. Sizes 14-16." In the corner it says, " be sure to give the correct size." A negligee shirt was made with a soft front and wasn't starched. Men wore them to work or to casual parties. The term "negligee shirt" is unusual, because now, "negligee" is usually used only to refer to a woman's light dressing gown, usually trimmed with ruffles or lace. Centuries earlier, though, the term "negligant" referred to a more casual state of dress for both men and women, so that's where the term "negligee shirt" came from. The shirts were striped in assorted colors. The reason these shirts were called the "Holman's special shirt" is because the shirts were at a very special price.
