List of Peddlars' Licenses
This is a page from the ROYAL GAZETTE. This newspaper was printed in the year 1904 on April 30. It is a special page made to show who had a peddlar's license. How the page is organized is easy to understand. The first thing you see (if you are looking from the right) is when the license expires. Next to that is the name of the peddlar. Many of the people who got a license were Irish and Scottish, but if the peddlars were Syrian or Russian, the nationality would be put in brackets beside the name. After that, the page shows the peddlar's address. Then, the page shows their age. If there was no age shown, then it meant that the newspaper did not know the age, or the peddlar simply did not tell the government his age. What type of license the peddlar received was shown next (if it was a license for a horse and and wagon or if it was for one on foot). Every peddlar was given a number to help keep track of peddlars. The pack peddlars had their number put on one of their bags and the horse and wagon peddlars had their number put on their wagon.
At the bottom of this page, there is a notice. The notice tells about how people (peddlars) were peddling without a license. It also told the price of a license. The last thing shown is the price of a fine. The fines were given when a license wasn't shown, when the peddlar didn't have a license, or when the peddlar didn't have a number written on the wagon or bag. The fines ranged from $5.00 to $40.00, depending on what rule you didn't follow.
