Montague Hearse

Montague Hearse

Image of a horse-drawn hearse in Montague, Prince Edward Island, 1910-1930. Man driving the hearse may be D. L. MacKinnon (identified on back of PARO copy print).

In the late 1800's and the early 1900's, on Prince Edward Island, they used hearses for funerals like we now use cars. Hearses were a little different because they had to be hauled by two horses, and a hearse was a carriage instead of a car. You would put the casket in the back for it to be taken to the cemetery or parlour.

The curtains in the back would be for decoration. If they were up, it would let people know that they didn't have to pull over, and if they were down, then people would know that they had to pull over out of respect.

This picture was taken in the time period of 1910-1930. The man driving the hearse may be D. L. MacKinnon.
