The Holey Dollar

The 3D image (PEI Coin 3D) shows a 1 cent coin. This is just one of the many coins used at this time. Another example is the Holey Dollar. The Holey dollar is a Spanish coin. It had a crown on it, and it was a grey brown color. It was also pretty big. Prince Edward Islanders wanted their own currency, but it was harder than they thought. They had no place to print the money yet, but they were thinking, "We need our own currency. We need to find a way to have our own unique money for ourselves." So the government decided to bring 1000 Spanish dollars to Prince Edward Island and poked holes into the middle of the coins. They did this so the coins would be different than the Spanish coins. The people on Prince Edward Island would have their own money! People used this coin for everything. After a little bit, people managed to counterfeit them easily, so in 1814, they stopped making the coins, although people kept using the Holey Dollar until 1824.
