She is also wearing a hat, and she is holding a parasol. She is wearing a scarf, and if you look closely, she is wearing a necklace. She is not smiling because it usually took a long time to take a picture; the film would take a long time to capture the image. She looks like she is a pretty rich woman, because she has expensive clothes. When her picture was taken, it was probably fall or winter, because she looks like she is outside. The picture may have been taken outside because of the pebbles, but photographers sometimes arranged the scenery to look like the outside even though the picture might have been taken inside. The picture is found at the Archives in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island.
The fabric from the dress probably came from the general store. Mrs. Newbery would then have gotten a dressmaker to make the dress. All general stores would probably sell similar fabric.
