Harvesting Hay

Image shows an unidentified man harvesting hay, ca. 1890This picture was taken around 1890 and shows a farmer harvesting hay. What the farmers would do with the hay was to bundle it and leave it in the field to dry. Later on, the farmer would hook a team of horses up to the hay wagon and pick up the bundles. The farmer would haul them back to the barn and put them in the loft.

Today, farmers would use a machine called a baler that takes the hay and wraps it into a large circle and ties it. They hook the baler up to a tractor, which is a substitute for a horse, and it bales the hay. They then let it dry, then take it back to the farm and wrap it in white plastic. After the haying is done, the farmers leave the hay in rows and eventually feed it to the cows or horses.
