Hay Wagon

This image shows a horse drawn hay wagon, ca. 1920. An unidentified man is standing on top of the hay, driving the wagon. The image is taken from the ground, looking up at the horse and the man.The hay wagon is used for hauling hay from the field to the barn loft. The hay wagon is made of wood and is hooked up to two horses. The driver is the farmer, who stands on the top of the wagon. His job is to pile up the hay. There are people on the ground throwing it up to him. Farmers use the hay wagon to get hay back to the barn loft.

The picture was taken in a field in P.E.I. around 1920. It was summer when this picture was taken. The man is wearing a hat with a short sleeved shirt and a pair of pants. It looks like there is a tree in the bottom right hand corner. It looks like a pine tree with the pine branches. The man at the top has a pitchfork in one hand and the reins in the other.

This picture looks very different from now. Today, there would be a tractor instead of a horse. The man would be in the tractor and there would be another tractor to load. The hay would also have been in bales. A hay bale comes in two shapes: a square bale and a round bale. A bale is made by a machine hauled behind a tractor. Before you bale, you have to cut with a hay byne, but that is what we would use today. Back then they threw the hay on a hay wagon and hauled it away to the barn. Haying took place in the summer because after you cut grain in the fall, you let it grow into green grass. By the time summer gets here, the hay is ready to be cut. People cut hay to feed their horses and or cows.
