Monday and Tuesday great preparations went on at Green Gables. Having the minister and his wife to tea was a serious and important undertaking, and Marilla was determined not to be eclipsed by any of the Avonlea housekeepers.
Mrs. Rachel Lynde, curious about why Matthew Cuthbert has driven away from Green Gables that afternoon, visits Marilla Cuthbert to find out what's happening. Her keen eye sees the tea that's been laid out for the expected boy orphan.
Marilla gives Anne permission to invite Diana to tea. Anne, excited, wants only the best of everything for her friend.
