Context: What is a General Store?

Orwell Corner General Store ExteriorA general store was a building where people went to to buy household goods, fabric, food, medicine or other items. The general store didn't carry anything that was not needed or necessary to have for survival. It was one-stop shopping, even though there wasn't a wide variety to choose from.

Men at a Drug Store

Image depicts five men standing outside of H. A. Ellis' drugstore in Montague, Prince Edward Island, ca. 1915. The name "C. S. Inman, Attorney at Law" appears on the door next to the drugstore.

In this picture, there are five men in front of a drug store. The drug store looks fancy, with a really nice, big sign above it. Also, there is a nice little path in front, so maybe that was where the buggies parked. There is a little passage way to walk up to the front. After you get to the front of the buliding, there is a little set of stairs and a really pretty awning; it's very pretty.
